ASH GROUND LAKE

With more than a 1000 yards of bank Ash grounds has several attractive islands within easy casting distance this lake also offers many sub surface features including gravel bars and an undulating bed with some deeper pockets with depths to 10ft, the margins are also home to a varied array of aquatic vegetation including Reed mace, Bull rushes and water lilies providing both cover and spawning sites.

Swim 1 – Ash Ground Lake

Ash Ground swim 1 is a unique swim that is the first swim on the lake. Small due to pathway and otter fence, swim 1 is only for a day ticket angler and has plenty of water to make your day amazing. Lilies, Island, margin fishing or just out in front at about 5 foot of water, this swim will not fail to please. Good head of roach, tench and carp in the lake so would really recommend some strong-smelling attractors and maybe some fake or real sweetcorn.

Swim 1 is one of those swims that may be overlooked, but there is a little secret you need to know… (to the left of the swim by the pump is where we constantly feed the fish over the year).

Swim 2 – Ash Ground Lake

Ash Ground swim 2 is one of the best on the lake. You have features everywhere including lilies, island, margin, 5 foot channel in front of you, big open water where fish are seen crashing day and night and finally a little island which is shared either side with swim 3 and is the edge of your swim. Nights is when this swim comes alive as fish use this as a main route up and down the lake and patrol constantly though the channel. Swim 2 has always been a great place to spend time and again at the start of the lake so closer to those needed toilets.

Swim 2 has an abundance of stunning views, and you will often see bird life such as Kites, Kestrels, Swallows and bats at night. It is big enough for a couple of reasonably sized bivvies and remember that you can fish with 3 rods per fisherman.

Swim 3 – Ash Ground Lake

Swim 3 is a perfect place for a great weekend of fishing with so much for the single angler or those joining friends on swim 2 (Double). You have a small island to the left of the swim and the right hand side is your water and left is swim 2. You then have open water in front of you and an amazing large island just in front. Here you can lay your traps, but please do not forget the deeper 5 foot water in the channel and margins close by also as fish are seen patrolling these and using as a main pathway to go up and down the lake. This is the north side of the lake and those cold winds over winter will be behind you so you can set your bivvy up to protect you from those colder winds.

Great swim, great features, very popular so please book early.

Swim 4 – Ash Ground Lake

Swim 4 is one of those swims that people fight to get on to and being a double you can fish with one friend or even add swim 5 to your booking for a 3 person. Why choose this swim? Simple, carp are seen here constantly both day and night with lots of crashing in open water and bubbles from feeding fish in the channel in front.

DT Baits work in this area, but don’t forget to add your DNA and maybe some sticky bait to add that strong attractor to bring them down to your hook baits. Northerly side so can protect yourself using your bivvy behind for you from those strong and often cold winds in the winter and have great sunshine on those warm summer months.

Swim 5 – Ash Ground Lake

Fishing with friends or on your own, swim 5 has something for everyone. With swim 4 (a double) just next to you, enjoy some of the best water on the lake. With open water, edge of an island, lilies, margins and channel fishing, this swim is the right swim may just be the difference between blanking or some amazing photos of huge Carp. This is the northerly part of the lake and yes in the winter months it can be one of the coldest but wow the opportunities to catch your PB is immense.

Bring a non-fishing family member, share a meal but most importantly just enjoy this magnificent lake.

Swim 6 – Ash Ground Lake

So you have now passed 5 of the most stunning fishing swims in Essex and you have arrived at swim 6, so what makes this swim so good? This swim is the first of several short cast swims and as you will find on swim 7,8 and 9 on this northerly edge, fish use the channel to navigate up and down the lake. When moving up the lake, swim 6 is the first that they come to and in the early mornings, this is probably offers one of the best opportunities to hook into one of the large carp that live in this picturesque lake. A proactive and pre planning fisherman will do so well in this swim and setting yourself up for a fantastic trip by baiting small areas and allowing the fish to come in will give you some stunning photos later.

Swim 7 – Ash Ground Lake

This swim has affectionately been named the ‘Tench swim’ and since the new management team has taken over at Fennes Fishing, many tench have been caught in this swim. With tench estimated to be up to 8lb, you may just catch your personal best on swim 7. Sweetcorn, Pellet and lots of hemp seem to be the order of the day here and will trick many of your prey into being in your landing net. We prefer that tench are not kept in a keep net and therefore ask that you take your pictures and return them as soon as possible.

This does not detract away from the fact that carp are constantly arriving and leaving this swim. Many will pass through to the top end during the day and the bottom end in early evening.

Swim 8 – Ash Ground Lake

Swim 8 is one of our short casting swims but with a difference, positioned on the right hand (northerly) side of the lake, this cracking swim just oozes fish. Moving up the lake during the day and down in the evening, carp can be seen fizzing away, feeding on the bottom. Many anglers will fish to the far bank and maybe the cut through channel as these instantly grab your attention, but please, do not forget the margins and 6 foot channel just in front of you. Many fishermen will bait the far bank and we understand why, but please do not pass the chance to stop the carp in their tracks by baiting the middle of the channel. In this swim, you will see fish just under your rod tips and maybe using a pellet will add to your chance of landing a personal best.

Swim 9 – Ash Ground Lake

There is a swim on every lake that just catches your attention and swim 9 is this swim at Ashgrounds. Beautiful surroundings and fantastic scenery, this swim is a favourite place for so many. A smaller area of water but please do not think this detracts from your opportunity to catch the amazing Carp, Tench, Roach and other fish species that live in this superb venue. If you like float fishing, this is a swim for you, if you like fishing on the top, this is a swim for you and if you like to risk fishing against lilies and reeds, then this is absolutely the swim to choose. With a footpath behind you, dog walkers may stop and say hello but this isn’t really an inconvenience. If you are looking for longer casting, please go to another swim but if you are laying your traps and really want to catch that prized fish, then swim 9 is a must.

Swim 10 – Ash Ground Lake

Swim 10 is at the farthest point of this stunning, 5.4 acre lake and is a swim that is just well worth the effort reaching. a quiet but safe place to fish with the sound of nature singing out all around you. In the colder months the island gives you protection from those cold northerly winds and in the summer all I can say is wow!!! the fish love this end of the lake during the day and will sit around the reeds bathing in the sun. This swim and swim 9 will be closed during spawning to give the fish a safe place to bring the next generation in and many will love to watch them chasing each other at this important time. If you are looking for a place to relax, fish and enjoy the surroundings away from others, this is definitely the place to be. Short casts, float fishing for numerous tench that reside in this lake, or maybe some dog biscuits on the top, this swim has it all.

Swim 11 – Ash Ground Lake

So Many people have told me that this swim is in their top 5 on Ashgrounds. This idyllic swim sits with so many features in front of it and perfect for short casting fishing or using that important bait boat. You have lilies, you have a cut through, you have an island directly in front, you have margins and a channel that sits about 5-6 foot. This is a main thoroughfare from one end of the lake to another and carp can be seen moving along and often stopping to sunbath in warmer weather. During the day, this swim is a pleasure to sit and plan your traps, but in the early evening, this swim comes alive and fish really do love to feed the channels and margins.

Swim 12 – Ash Ground Lake

Now coming back down the lake on the southern side, swim 12 is an interesting swim which confuses many fishermen. Do I fish to the lilies? Do I head for the gap =between the islands? Do I flick out a bait in the ample margin? The fact is that you need to go back to basics with this swim and not fish the obvious. Throughout the day and night you will find carp in this area and your job is to attract them in and make them go into a fishing frenzy. High attractors such as sticky mix, ground baits, DNA, Glugs and oils are a must for this swim as you will be competing against swims 10,11 and 13 for the fish. This swim is a must try and will probably give one of the best opportunities to land that fish of a lifetime, but you will have to work at it.

Swim 13 – Ash Ground Lake

Are you looking to fish with friends in a swim which has probably the most water in front of you. To the left you have open water, directly in front is an island and channel where fish can be seen crashing and fizzing most of the day and night and to the right is some great margin fishing. This swim lends itself to being surface fished, baits popped up or zig rigged for the keen and able angler. Swim 13 is on the southerly side of the lake but is the only swim on the lake that faces east so a fantastic swim in the early spring and summer months. Swim 13 really does capture your attention and has great features, however you must respect swim 14 to the right and maybe talk to them about where you are looking to fish so that you do not cross over.

Swim 14 – Ash Ground Lake

This swim is one of our favourites due to the ample features and great opportunities to catch many species and maybe that personal best. The first thing that you will notice is a small island just in front of you and fish circle this island constantly feeding on those naturals that fall into the water. To the left hand side you have a corner with a fallen tree that has been cut back. This is a great corner to work your magic and pull out some stunning carp or tench, but please respect and talk to swim 13 so that you are not crossing over each other and can work together to bring those fish in. The small island is a place to watch and bait up to move your rods onto maybe a bit later in the day as the light fades, strong attractors are the right choice here. To the right you have a channel and a large island in the distance, here you can again fish to lilies and you have a large amount of water in the channel and great margins.

Swim 15 – Ash Ground Lake

Swim 15 offers something for everyone, if your fishing with friends you have double swims either side which makes social fishing really simple. If you are on your own, then you have great margins, 9 foot channel in front, and an island directly i n front also which is a main thoroughfare for the fish travelling and navigating their lake. This swim is a perfect place to practice your zig rigs and maybe learn how to take fish of the top with dog biscuits. A swim where effective and well thought out fishing is a must and working with the swims either side will help to make a memorable day and even make some new friends.

Swim 16 – Ash Ground Lake

Swim 16 is a great swim for a pair of anglers to spend their time and socialise with plenty of water and a high chance of catching some amazing fish. Swim 16 is a double swim with a lot of room to the left between swim 15 and in front some of the most sought after water in the lake. The channel in front of you is the deepest in the lake at nearly 9 foot deep and an area where fish can be seen fizzing and feeding throughout the year. This popular swim is protected from cold winds by the island just in front and this also is quite shaded through hotter days from direct sunlight. To the left and right, both fisherman can enjoy some amazing sport in the margins, the island has lilies and target areas and floating those dog biscuits will bring the fish to the top if they are in the mood.

Swim 17 – Ash Ground Lake

Like so many of the swims on Ashgrounds, this is again a popular swim for many anglers on the lake as it literally has a bit of everything for any situation or preference. Open water to the front left, edge of a fish popular island, 9ft channel, lilies, margins and so on. This swim is a place that may get hectic with runs and many fisherman will talk about this swim for months or even years to come. Shaded from the wind by the island, constant fishing moving in front, best zig rig swim and even tench, rudd, roach and perch grace this swim. Magnificent in pretty much every way, you will be delighted with this choice of swim.

Swim 18 – Ash Ground Lake

The final swim of the lake is swim number 18 and this single swim is an absolute diamond. If you are only looking to fish by yourself and want to focus on your swim then number 18 could just be your lucky number. Isolated on its own bank, Carp, Tench, Rudd, Roach and Perch can all be found here with channels in front and to the right, lilies to the left, an end of an island and margin fishing, you just will not be disappointed when you choose this swim. Only negative is that the car park is directly behind you and as we are a very busy lake, you may be disturbed during the day by people arriving and departing.
